I have a great love for film, and had only seen a handful of fashion films in the past, and this one sure did top them all.
Dior and I follows Raf Simon's as he creates his first haute couture collection as creative director for Dior. Raf was chosen, but was not 'an obvious candidate' for the position of creative director at Dior. Firstly because, he was very much involved within menswear, and secondly because he was often associated with working with minimalist brands. However Raf emphasises here that this is where people are often misunderstood, as he is in fact not a minimalist, and this is shown by the contrast in his designs whilst working at Dior.
The direction of this film not only emphasised the beauty of the collection itself, but the immensity of work involved by Raf and his assistant, and everyone involved within the brand, including the cheerful dressmakers themselves. The film allows you to really get to know some of these dressmakers personalities through brief interviews, which I loved as it is often forgotten that without the skilled dressmakers themselves the collection would not be present.
In particular I enjoyed the snippets of voiceovers from the past of Christian Dior himself talking about the brand, and the use of music throughout the film to create emotion and an atmosphere within particular scenes.
I highly recommend watching this film, as it is not only visually beautiful (especially the final show itself!), but it also a very emotional film that really allows you to connect and empathise with Raf and the team at Dior whilst they work towards the final collection.
