COLOUR PROJECT | DECADENT JEWELS

Welcome back!

Today's post features group work that we were given to complete over the past week. As a group we were asked to choose a colour story of our choice out of a variety of colour themes, and then create an image which displayed this colour story. These included brights, monochromes, complex colours and pastels. My group chose the theme of 'decadent jewels' which fitted into the complex colour group perfectly. This theme includes colours such as amethyst purples, deep reds, emerald greens and golds.

To begin this task we compiled many images together through the use of Pinterest, to find inspiration and give us an idea of exactly how we wanted our image to look and what we were trying to express through this image.

Here are some of the images we found as a group below.

Once we had gathered many photos together we began to envision our final image. Thinking about luxury and opulence led us to think more about connotations such as greed, and so at first we considered using fast food packets embellished with jewels in our image or using a model to emphasis the greed aspect of luxury in some shape or form.

We also noticed that these 'decadent jewels' colours where quite theatrical, and so decided to create our image around this particular connotation of our colour story.

Our final materials that we used included:

1. A red velvet curtain - Charity shop
2. A mask, that we then cut, spray painted gold and then stuck on 'embellishments' (which were originally a Primark bracelet)
3. Leaves
4. Fake ivy - Ebay
5. Gold spray painted wallpaper - Wilkinsons
6. Lace - Charity shop
7. Raspberries

Our eventual image, we decided would be inspired by a perfume ad or a still life image, rather than an image in motion with more 'life', featuring a model.

To create this image we draped the velvet curtain over a chair and then placed our materials randomly on the curtain and around the main focus of our image, the embellished mask.

Here below, are some photos we took whilst creating our final image.

Once we had chosen our final photo, we all agreed that we should edit the image slightly to make it appear darker, and more mysterious.

Below is our final photoshopped image.

It is perhaps a little darker than we had initially hoped, and slightly too Shakespearian. But overall we feel that this image does display what we were trying to convey with this colour story. The autumnal setting of raspberries and leaves reflects the autumnal colours, the picture involves a variety of textures often associated with luxury and the mask provides a theatrical yet regal look to the image.

I have learnt a lot over this past week completing this post, in particular that I need to improve my photoshopping skills!

I hope you enjoyed reading this post.
